How to Juggle the Different Hats You Wear

When you wake up in the morning, you’re either a student or an employee. When the clock strikes and signals it’s already the end of your work day, you come home and fulfill your duties as a father, mother, son, daughter, brother, or sister. When the weekend arrives, you drive to your grandparents’ house and put on your grandson or granddaughter hat. You might even wear your cousin hat if your favorite cousins are also there. When time permits, you get to put on your friend hat, too. 

Regardless of what you do and where you are in life, you take on different roles each day. 

Juggling different hats might be overwhelming at times, but you continue to do it anyway. At the end of the day, each hat is a part of you, and as you fulfill each hat’s role, you get an immense sense of purpose and satisfaction.

Here are a few tips on how you can juggle the different hats you wear to fulfill the different roles you have, while being healthy and efficient at the same time: 

Know Your Roles

Listing down your different roles may be old-fashioned, but it’s helpful. Journalizing or note-taking can help you reflect on your roles and seek answers to certain questions. It’s important to recognize the responsibilities and expectations each hat entails. In doing so, you get to see the full extent of what’s expected from you for the different roles you take on. It helps you prioritize the tasks you need to accomplish and organize your remaining activities. Lastly, it helps you become more sensitive to your own thoughts and emotions. Keeping track of your roles provides you with an overview of your struggles, but also your accomplishments. When small wins are celebrated, you can get more motivated to do better with each hat you put on.

Learn Smooth Transitions

Going from wearing one hat to another requires enough time and mental energy to switch seamlessly. Each hat requires a different set of skills and knowledge. You have to take time for yourself and make a conscious effort to put yourself in the right mindset to take on the other role in the same way you did the previous one. You have to internalize your own thoughts and feelings, for you to prepare yourself for the next one. Small activities can help you with this transition, such as listening to music, reading quick write-ups, squeezing in quick workouts or stretches, taking a short walk, or even driving around the city. 

Set Boundaries

As much as many of us would like to think of ourselves as superhumans, there are always limitations to what each of us can do. Knowing your limitations can help you set reasonable boundaries to avoid reaching the point of burnout. Always remember your personal motivation, the amount of energy you can exert, and resources you can utilize. More than that, it also helps you recognize when you might need help from your support system. It’s okay to say “no”, take a step back, and hit the pause button. This way, you get to keep things enjoyable for yourself and for others.
